At the moment there is a major regeneration programme taking place in Chelmsley Wood. We want to mark the heritage of our area and community and for Chelmund to be reinstated. When the estate was built a load of random names were given to different areas including, for some reason, castle names. Ironically, local castles, like Kenilworth, were ignored and instead they used obscure castle names that have no relation to the area or its people. Craig Croft (go figure) is being demolished and a completely new layout being built. The community were given the chance by Solihull Borough Council to rename the area. The shortlist the parish council produced was:
Craig Croft, Craig Park or Dunster Road. There were suggestions from many local people to use Chelmund's name for the area to give it a new start but this was rejected by the parish council. To their credit Solihull Council suspended the voting in order to allow some community suggestions. The voting took place in February and March 2013 and Chelmund's Cross won with over 65% of the vote.
There is a startling similarity in the legends of Chelmund where he battled with the infamous Craig the Celt. Who'd have thought such a strange coincidence would happen?
This is a historically accurate picture of what Craig the Celt actually, really looked like in real life.
And that's true.
